Stepping off the Metro was interesting as that particular area of Paris is known for its African and Middle Eastern influences. Definitely looked a lot different than the other neighborhoods we had seen, though I bet the food would have been good.
We were once again able to tour the inside of the church. I found it very strange that there was a mass going on while we walked around. Pews were set up around the perimeter of the church for tourists to kneel and pray while the French mass was conducted.
John talked me into buying tickets to get access to the dome up above the church. Me and heights don't agree but I made it up the 300 (literally) steps and was happy I did. The views of the city were incredible with the Eiffel Tower in the distance.
After our sightseeing morning we were tired and ready to chill. Our bike tour guide
informed us that the French are very good at doing nothing and doing it well. Sick of walking and the touristy stuff, we decided to see how well were at being French and headed to the Palace Gardens nearby our hotel to try our hand at doing nothing.
Just after noon we found hundreds of French hanging out in chairs, eating, talking, sleeping, reading the paper, relaxing. It looked so inviting!
We scrounged around for a couple metal chairs and found a spot amongst the locals. We ate our lunch (standard ham and cheese on baguette), stared at the palace, people watched for a few, made small talk, and then John gave me the "ready whenever you are" and we realized we sucked at doing nothing. It was quite boring! But then again I've never been good at relaxing so what was I thinking?
